virginia state policeVirginia State Police Trooper A.J. Garasimowicz is investigating the circumstances surrounding the injury and death of a Rockbridge County man in Augusta County.

At approximately 8 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 10), Jeremiah E. Harris, 25, of Raphine, Va., was a front-seat passenger in a vehicle traveling along Stingy Hollow Road in Augusta County. According to witnesses and evidence collected at the scene, Harris suddenly opened the passenger-side door and jumped from the moving vehicle. Startled, the driver of the vehicle immediately braked and Harris was ejected across the front of the vehicle. He landed in a nearby ditch. There is no evidence that the vehicle ever struck Harris.

The driver of the vehicle called 911, and the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police responded to the scene.

Harris was flown to UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville, where he died Sunday (Sept. 11) as a result of his injuries. His remains were transported to the Office of the Medical Center in Roanoke for examination and autopsy.

The incident remains under investigation.
