Governor Terry McAuliffe announced today more than $3 million in Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) for the counties of Dickenson, Scott, York, Lee and Fauquier, as well as the town of Clarksville and the city of Franklin. Projects include water and sewer, downtown revitalization and microenterprise.
Speaking about today’s announcement, Governor McAuliffe said, “Funding from sources like the Community Development Block Grant is vital as we work to build a new Virginia economy. Through the CDBG program, we are able to provide resources for important economic and community development projects that help create great places for our citizens to live, work and conduct business.”
Since 1982, the federally-funded CDBG program has been administered by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), and Virginia receives approximately $17 million annually for this grant program. CDBG grants are awarded through a competitive process. Most projects benefit low- and moderate-income persons, and many projects are targeted for the prevention or elimination of slums and blighting conditions.
“The CDBG program continues to help Virginia’s localities make the necessary improvements to stay competitive and thrive in the 21st Century,” said Secretary of Commerce and Trade Maurice Jones. “These are the types of tools we need in our toolbox to help our communities, particularly those in rural areas, continue their economic rebound.”
During this year’s competitive cycle for the Community Improvement Fund, 20 proposals were submitted, and 13 projects received the initial funding. In addition to the Community Improvement Fund, projects were funded under the CDBG Construction Ready Water and Sewer Fund, as well as the CDBG Community Economic Development Fund. Funds are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis from January 1 through the end of September.
