Women’s soccer: North Carolina Wesleyan tops EMU
The Royals recorded their first loss of the season ending the weekend 1-1-0 to start off the 2018 season.
After being unable to finish their game last night due to lightning, the Battling Bishops started off the game strong scoring in just the 5th minute. Cydney Nicols took a pass over the back line and finished with the ball in the back of the net.
EMU came back to tie the game in the 25th minute when Olivia Dalke (Dallas, Ore./Dallas) took a shot that was deflected off of the N.C. Wesleyan goalkeeper and over to an awaiting Haley Barnes (Richmond, Va./John Randolph Tucker) who took control of the ball and stuck it in the upper left.
The Battling Bishops started off the second half similar to how they started the first by scoring the eventual game-winner in the 51st minute and then capitalized on a free kick opportunity in the 55th minute to take a two goal lead over the Royals. As the half wore on NCWC’s fresher legs became more apparent as they controlled the flow of play.
In goal for the Royals Leah Wenger (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) had two saves and Emily Young (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) added one as a late substitute.
EMU’s soccer women return to action Wednesday, Sept. 5 when they travel to St. Mary’s (Md.) for a 4:00pm game.
