Although the global economic crisis has had many tragic consequences for people all over the world, it is also true that many individuals, families and communities have taken this challenging time as an opportunity to reflect on their current lifestyle choices and to begin making real changes in their lives.
By seeing the economic recession not simply as a problem to be overcome and put behind us but rather as a wakeup call to think deeply about the ways in which all of us can move towards practices which are more fulfilling, bring greater health and wellness, and foster authentic relationships with others, we can take feelings of fear and despair and move towards a sense of hope and excitement with the realization that we have the power to create a better and more meaningful way of life.
One of the most basic aspects of our daily lives is our relationship to the food that nourishes and sustains us. For many people in modern societies, food has become too fast, too commercialized, and too far removed from its source. But many of us are beginning to reconsider our food choices and to raise our level of consciousness about how these choices impact ourselves, other people, farm animals, and the environment. In growing numbers, individuals are educating themselves about food issues and choosing to shop locally, buy organic, join food co-ops, support farmers markets, and, when feasible, to grow their own food! In so doing we are not only creating a healthier environment but eating fresher and better tasting food, improving our health and that of our families and having alot of fun!
