Still basking in the glow of the UVA Basketball national championship, I spent otherwise productive time coming up with a UVA Basketball National Championship Playlist.
Complete with liner notes.
- “We Are the Champions,” Queen (for obvious reasons)
- “Thunderstruck,” AC/DC (note to the folks in events: whatever their rate is, have them at JPJ for the banner ceremony in November)
- “Warehouse,” Dave Matthews Band (the live version, with the “woo!” from the crowd as the chorus)
- “Ain’t No Grave,” Johnny Cash (cowards die a thousand deaths; ain’t no grave can hold a ‘Hoo body down)
- “Don’t Stop Believin’,” Journey (it actually happened)
- “Forgot About Dre,” Dr. Dre and Eminem (Texas Tech, thankfully, at the end of regulation, forgot about Dre)
- “Happy,” Pharell Williams (the 2019 UVA valedictory speaker)
- “My Shot,” Hamilton soundtrack (a nod to Kyle Guy, a noted fan of the new classic Broadway musical, also known for being young, scrappy and hungry, and for not throwing away his shot)
- “Purple Rain,” Prince (a nod to Minnesota, and thankful for the good weather)
- “Started from the Bottom,” Drake (from UMBC to a national title; wouldn’t have happened without the whole team effin’ here)
- “Stayin’ Alive,” Bee Gees (aggregate score at the end of regulation of UVA’s final three NCAA Tournament games: ‘Hoos 201, Opponents 200)
- “It’s the End of the World As We Know It,” REM (I still say they were lamenting the end of Midwinters, and in any case, I feel fine)
- “The Good Old Song,” Cavalier Marching Band (we’ll sing it o’er and o’er)
Have one to add? Let me know in comments.
