school-clipart.jpgA scholarship honoring the 92-year-old treasurer of the Rockbridge County Democratic Committee will be the focal point of an April 5 banquet at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington.

The scholarship, which will go annually to a local high-school student, is being set up in the name of Jacqueline Corbin Pleasants, a community leader in Rockbridge for more than seven decades now.

Pleasants is the daughter of one of Southwest Virginia’s first black physicians, and as such knows the value of education for all.

“It is the only way to shorten the disparity between the haves and have-nots. People who do not learn are lost. An education should not be something special. It should be like the air we breathe and the food we eat, a necessary part of living,” Pleasants said.

The April 5 banquet will be held in the Mezzanine Ballroom at the Virginia Horse Center and will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Tickets for the “Celebrate Jackie!” Banquet are $50 each. Seating is limited, and tickets must be purchased by March 31. For tickets or more information, please contact Joe Skovira at 540.348.1093.

Contributions are being accepted to endow the Jacqueline Corbin Pleasants Scholarship Fund. Contributions of any amount are welcome and tax-deductible, and may be sent to:
