Women’s soccer: No. 2 Virginia hosts No. 1 FSU In Sunday showdown
It’s the final home match of the regular season for Virginia (12-1-1, 6-1-0 ACC) who is coming off a 1-0 victory over Louisville on Thursday night. In that match, freshman Brianna Westrup scored her first career goal in her first start as she lifted the Cavaliers to the victory. Florida State (13-1-2, 6-0-2 ACC) is coming off a double overtime draw at Virginia Tech on Thursday night.
Single-game tickets are $9 for reserved seats if available, $7 for adults and $5 for youth, seniors and faculty/staff. Group ticket orders of 20 or more tickets are $4.
The Cavaliers have been solid with the ball distribution and scoring this season with 12 different goal scorers on the season and seven different players hitting game-winners this season.
Juniors Morgan Reuther (Chantilly, Va.) and Alexis Shaffer (Cary, N.C.) lead the offense with seven goals each this season. Shaffer is the team’s point leader with 20 and has six assists on the season. Senior Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.) is the team assist leader with seven on the season and needs one point to become the all-time career leader in points at Virginia. She currently has 138 for her career to tie Angela Hucles for the top spot.
Morgan Stearns (San Antonio, Texas) has started the last six games in goal for the Cavaliers and holds a 6-1-1 record on the season. She has helped Virginia post five shutouts in ACC play this season and nine shutouts on the season. The Cavaliers have allowed only eight goals on the season through 14 games thanks to the play of Stearns and a solid back line.
Florida State also puts a stout defense on the field, allowing only seven goals on the season and posting 11 shutouts on the year with Cassie Miller (13-1-2) in goal for the Seminoles.
Offensively, Florida State is paced with six goals each from Brooke Thorvaldsdottir and Cheyna Williams. The Seminoles have scored 43 goals on the season from 13 different players.
Sunday’s contest will be televised by ESPNU and is also available online through the ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.
