Fear and Loathing in Waynesboro column by Chris Graham

It’s still just talk, but even the idea that Jerry Gwaltney might be heading back to Waynesboro for a second try at the city-manager job is starting to worry people who remember his years in the big office in City Hall.

I got an e-mail the morning after we broke the news about the possible return of Gwaltney from a resident who told me of an uncomfortable meeting that she had with the then-city manager in the early 1990s.

A shakeup at the police department had been the source of controversy among some friends that the resident knew in the department. “I knew some of the officers, and I expressed my opinion based on the information they provided me,” the resident said.

“Gwaltney called me into his office, and he and three of his goons grilled me for about an hour to harrass me about where I obtained my information. They never learned who I had talked to, because he would have fired them,” the resident said.

“He rules his office by fearmongering. If I can help prevent him from coming to Waynesboro, I will. Let me know how I can help,” the resident said.
