Smith announces candidacy for Waynesboro City Council
Lorie M. Smith announced on Sunday her candidacy for the At-Large seat for Waynesboro City Council currently held by Mayor Frank Lucente.
“Our citizens deserve the expectation of quality services for the taxes they pay. Further, in this difficult economic climate, there is a critical need to have strong leadership in economic development and job creation,” said Smith, a former chair of the Waynesboro School Board who served a term on City Council representing Ward D from 2006-2010. The News Virginian’s April 24 article about “zero-based” budgeting brought back memories of the federal government’s use of this approach more than 15 years ago. It proved then to be a quickly passing, inefficient, and ineffective, fad. Current City Council member, and candidate for reelection, Lorie Smith has it right; the budget preparation process should focus on efficiently utilizing taxpayers dollars, not on starting over every year from a “zero base.” Read more

The four candidates for Waynesboro City Council met today in what will be their only joint appearance in advance of the May 4 city elections.
The candidates forum at the Waynesboro Senior Center put on display the contrasting styles and visions of the candidates for the open Ward C and Ward D seats on the City Council.

Waynesboro City Council candidate Lorie Smith will host an informal get-together at the Waynesboro Public Library on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Smith, the incumbent in Ward D, has held three roundtable-style discussions with citizens within the last two weeks.
Light refreshments will be served, and children are welcome.

Waynesboro City Councilwoman Lorie Smith will host an informal get-together today at 6:30 p.m. at the Waynesboro Country Club.
The get-together is part of a series of events that Smith is hosting to talk with voters across the city.
Smith is running for re-election to City Council in the May 4 city elections.
Light refreshments will be served, and children are welcome.

As my tenure on Waynesboro City Council comes to an end, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the citizens of Waynesboro for allowing me to serve on Council, as well as the School Board. There is truly no higher honor than to serve as an elected official. It is my hope that I have served you well!
Waynesboro holds much promise. As a native, I have certainly witnessed many years of transition. Our population is growing and we are seeing increased retail and commercial development. The recent PGI expansion announcement gives us optimism that industrial growth is indeed still possible. Our downtown continues to boast new businesses and private investment. Strong leadership will be required to keep the momentum going. Read more
