A new multi-modal roadway will open in Waynesboro on Friday which will connect South Delphine Avenue and Rosser Avenue.

Construction on the road began in August 2023 and was projected to take two years to complete.

The Southern Corridor project is located between exits 94 and 96 on Interstate 64. In total, the two-lane roadway is 1.6 miles long and includes a shared-use path.

The road is designed to enhance safety and reduce congestion around the two exits and improve access to industrial, commercial and residential properties in the southern portion of Waynesboro.

The road will also lead to Nature’s Crossing Technology Center that sits on land purchased by the city for $2.475 million in 2011. The city was recently awarded $1.5 million in development funding by the Virginia Economic Development Partnership to make the industrial park site project ready to attract high-impact tenants and create new jobs.

Representatives from the Virginia Department of Transportation, Commonwealth Transportation Board and the City of Waynesboro will take part in the ribbon cutting event on Aug. 22 at 10:30 a.m.

The ceremony will take place at 1152 Shenandoah Village Drive.

The road will open to the public immediately following the event.
