Nyeem Hill An alleged gang member who took a Virginia State Police trooper on a foot chase leading to a shelter in place order at the University of Virginia last week has finally been captured more than a week later.

Nyeem R. Hill, 19, of Albemarle County, was arrested in Charlottesville and taken into custody without incident.

Virginia State Police located Hill, and Albemarle County Police assisted with the arrest.

A State Police trooper attempted to stop Hill on Fontaine Avenue on Feb. 25 at 8:15 a.m. due to an expired inspection sticker. According to police, he refused to stop, and a pursuit was initiated.

The suspect took the northbound Route 29 exit and got off at Ivy Road. The suspect then struck two vehicles and jumped from the vehicle while it was still in drive, according to VSP. His Chevrolet Impala also struck a State Police vehicle.

There were no injuries.

The suspect was spotted later in the University Heights apartment complex leading to a shelter in place order for approximately three hours at UVA.

K9 dogs and helicopters were used in the search. The UVA baseball game start time was also delayed due to the incident.

At 1:45 p.m., law enforcement determined Hill was no longer in the area.

Hill has been charged with eluding, obstruction, two felony counts of hit and run, a misdemeanor count of hit and run, reckless driving, disregarding a stop sign and an inspection violation.

At the time of the traffic stop, Hill had active warrants from Albemarle County Police for malicious wounding, malicious wounding by mob and gang activity.

According to the University of Virginia Police Department, Hill also has a known criminal history.

In late 2023, Hill was arrested after carrying an AR-15 style rifle and handgun to the area of Westhaven Playground. Hill was sentenced to five years in prison in July related to the incident for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The court suspended all but 14 months of the sentence.

It is unknown when Hill was released.
