An Albemarle  County man was sentenced today in Charlottesville Circuit Court after being armed with an AR-15 style rifle and handgun in the area of Westhaven playground on Nov. 15.

Nyeem Rysuan Hill, 18, was sentenced by Judge Claude V. Worrell to five years in prison for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The court suspended all but 14 months of the sentence.

Hill was charged with possession of a firearm while respondent of a protective order and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The Charlottesville Police Department and Virginia State Police were alerted to Hill’s presence in the 800 block of Hardy Drive. Hill was still holding the firearm when contact was made by police.

“The prosecution of individuals who possess firearms after having been prohibited from doing so is and will continue to be a priority of this office,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Joe Platania.

This case was prosecuted by Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Nina-Alice Antony.
