The University of Virginia is advising students to shelter in place as police search for a known gang member who ran from a State Police trooper this morning.
The suspect, Nyeem Hill, 19, was last seen in the area of Alderman Road, after he allegedly fled during a traffic stop.
According to the University of Virginia Police Department, Hill has a known criminal history. Hill was armed with an AR-15 style rifle and handgun in the area of Westhaven Playground in late 2023. Hill was sentenced to five years in prison in July related to the incident for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The court suspended all but 14 months of the sentence. It is unknown when Hill was released from prison.
Police continue to search for the suspect by ground and in the air more than three hours after he fled and the pursuit was initiated.
As of 11:15 a.m., UVA Police said the search was being conducted in the Lewis Mountain neighborhood adjacent to Grounds.
Hill is described as an African-American male, six-feet-one inches tall, wearing a gray hoodie sweatshirt and dark pants.
Hill has no known affiliation with the University.
“All UVA community members should continue to shelter in place until further notice,” according to the UVA PD.
The trooper attempted to pull Hill over for an expired inspection sticker on a Chevrolet Impala on Fontaine Avenue at 8:13 a.m. The suspect took the Ivy Road exit, slowed and fled from the vehicle while it was still in drive, according to police.
The Impala then struck a State Police vehicle and at least one other vehicle.
There were no injuries.
The suspect was spotted in the University Heights apartment complex. A perimeter has been established with the assistance of Charlottesville, Albemarle County and UVA Police Departments.
Residents who may spot Hill are asked to call 9-1-1 to report.
