Staunton Library to offer tax forms: But fewer this year

Contributors

taxThe commencement of a new year also brings the start of tax season. Historically, the Staunton Public Library has provided IRS tax forms through its Tax Forms Outlet Program, and will continue to do so, albeit with fewer tax form offerings this year.

According to the IRS, 95 percent of taxpayers filed their tax returns electronically last tax season. As a result, the agency is significantly decreasing the variety of paper forms it offers to agencies like the Library.

The Library expects to receive the following federal tax forms from the IRS in the next several weeks:

  • Form 1040
  • Form 1040 A
  • Form 1040 EZ

Once the forms arrive, they will be placed on a display table for the public to access on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Library does not offer Virginia tax forms; however, all Virginia tax forms are available at the office of the Commissioner of Revenue, located on the first floor of City Hall. Staunton residents may have Virginia 760 returns prepared free of charge between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
State tax forms can be obtained online or one may request them by calling 804.367.8031.

Local taxpayers may obtain federal tax information and tax forms, as available, by contacting the Staunton IRS office, located at 1600 N. Coalter St., at 540.886.2089. Operating hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. The office is closed for lunch from noon to 1 p.m.

Additional online options for taxpayers include:

Free tax return preparation for individuals who earned $53,000 or less is available through Valley VITA, 250 S. Wayne Ave., Waynesboro. Call 540.221.1654 for more info.

The Staunton Public Library does not offer tax preparation.
