Today, U.S. Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner announced that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will be awarding $11,312,352 in grants to help fight veterans’ homelessness in Virginia.
The VA is distributing the awards under the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program to non-profit organizations and consumer cooperatives that provide services to very low-income veteran families living in or transitioning to permanent housing. These services aim to promote housing stability among low-income veterans and their families.
“I congratulate these Virginia community organizations on receiving more than $11 million in grants to continue serving our veterans by helping them with the challenge of transitioning into stable housing,” Warner said. “Veterans and their families have given so much to their country and communities, and we must honor their service by providing them the resources they have earned when they return home.”
“Our servicemembers deserve the utmost in care and support from their communities,” said Kaine. “These grants will give communities more resources to provide that support and help ensure stable housing for veterans and their families.”
Virginia Supportive Housing in Richmond, Total Action Against Poverty in Roanoke, Quin Rivers in Fredericksburg, the Office of Human Affairs in Newport News, Southeastern Tidewater Opportunity Project of Hampton Roads in Norfolk, Operation Renewed Hope in Alexandria and the Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation all received funds under the program. In addition, the VA awarded grants to Volunteers of America Chesapeake, the Appalachian Regional Coalition on Homelessness (ARCH), Friendship Place, Housing Counseling Services and the United States Veterans Initiative, which all service Virginia veterans from headquarters outside the Commonwealth.
