Yep, even more bad news

Media General has cut 90 jobs from its flagship newspaper, the Times-Dispatch in Richmond, according to a story on the paper’s website Thursday.
Twenty-eight of the positions were in the newsroom, according to an Associated Press report. The rest were scattered throughout the production, circulation, marketing, business, advertising, operations, facilities, prepress design and targeted solutions departments.

Media General, the parent company of the News Virginian in Waynesboro, has cut 170 positions from the Times-Dispatch labor force since last April.

“This is not a day I ever wanted to see come. I thank each and every departing employee for their years of valued service that helped publish Richmond’s daily newspapers,” T-D president and publisher Thomas A. Silvestri said.

The story on the Times-Dispatch website reported that there are no plans to eliminate days of production, and that the paper will focus on breaking and local news in its core market of Central Virginia, in a nod to moves over the past several months to cut deliveries in many areas outside of that core market and reduce news staff in outlying parts of Virginia that had made the T-D for decades the paper of record for the Commonwealth.

“Despite today’s announcement, our news mission at the RTD remains clear,” vice president and executive editor Glenn Proctor said. “We will provide readers and viewers with a vibrant news website and print product worth reading every day. We will do that by sharpening our focus on state and municipal government, state and local politics, education, crime and public safety, college and prep sports, and, of course, the economy and business.”

“We will do everything we can to retain our current customers by demonstrating our strength as the leading provider of high-quality content and services,” Silvestri said.
