Volunteers with Veterans Garden of Augusta, a new nonprofit project in Staunton, are working to create a healing, hands-on space for local veterans to connect, learn and grow, both in the garden and beyond it.

VGA recently secured a one-third acre lot on Frontier Drive in Staunton, and volunteers have begun preparing the land for their first growing season.

The garden will serve as a horticulture therapy and community learning space, offering classes in vegetable gardening, mushroom cultivation, beekeeping and food preservation.

Everything grown will be donated to veterans and local families in need.

Right now, the project is in the early build-out phase, and the nonprofit could use in-kind donations and volunteer help from the community.

Items being sought:

  • Topsoil, compost, or mulch for new raised beds
  • Lumber for raised beds and small structures
  • Fencing materials for a 500-foot perimeter deer fence
  • Native trees, shrubs, and fruit trees for screening and shade
  • Garden tools, wheelbarrows, and hoses
  • Stone, pavers, or gravel for pathways
  • Crushed gravel for wheelchair-accessible walkways
  • Trellis materials for climbing crops
  • Volunteers for planting and build days
  • Picnic tables and outdoor seating
  • Gardening tools and hand tools
  • General gardening supplies of any kind
  • Materials to build a small shed
  • Silage tarps for soil building
  • Wood to make compost bins
  • Fencing supplies for deer and roadside screening
  • Seeds for vegetables, herbs, and flowers
  • Wooden stakes and garden markers
  • Straw socks or straw bales for erosion control
  • Native flowers, plants, or grasses for pollinator areas
  • Any other materials, supplies, or equipment you are willing to donate
