One person was displaced from their Summit Avenue home after a fire Tuesday afternoon in Harrisonburg.

The Harrisonburg-Rockingham Emergency Communications Center began receiving 9-1-1 calls for a report of a structure fire in the Park View area of the city at approximately 4 p.m.

Approximately 20 firefighters arrived at the scene and encountered heavy smoke and fire in the attic of a one-story home in the 900 block of Summit Avenue.

The fire was contained within 20 minutes and completely extinguished within an hour.

No injuries were reported.

“We are relieved that no one was injured as a result of this fire,” said Matthew Tobia, Harrisonburg Fire Department chief. “Fortunately, alert neighbors noticed the fire and smoke coming from the attic area, alerted the resident who was not aware that the home was on fire and evacuated promptly. We are deeply appreciative of our community as they demonstrate their commitment to each other on a daily basis.”

The Harrisonburg Fire Marshal’s Office has labeled the fire as accidental and an investigation into the cause is ongoing.

The home sustained at least $100,000 in damage.

HFD was assisted by personnel from Rockingham County Fire Rescue and the Harrisonburg Rescue Squad.

Personnel remained on the scene for approximately two hours.
