Just in time to pay personal property and real-estate tax bills, the state of Virginia will begin rolling out tax rebates this week.
Eligible taxpayers will receive a one-time tax rebate of up to $200 if they filed individually, and up to $400 if they filed jointly. Taxpayers must file by Nov. 1, 2023 and have had a 2022 tax liability, to be eligible.
Rebates will be sent on a rolling basis with most rebates issued by Nov. 7.
“For the second time in two years, the Commonwealth is returning excess tax revenues to Virginia taxpayers,” said Secretary of Finance Stephen Cummings.
In 2022, eligible taxpayers received a one-time tax rebate of $250 if they filed individually and up to $500 if they filed jointly.
Cummings said more than $900 million will be refunded to taxpayers that filed a 2022 Virginia income tax return through the rebate.
Taxpayers who received a state tax refund by direct deposit will likely receive their one-time tax rebate by direct deposit in the same bank account.
All other eligible taxpayers will receive their rebate by paper check in the mail.
If a taxpayer owes money to Virginia Tax or another state or local agency, Virginia will use the tax rebate to satisfy that debt before sending the taxpayer the remainder of the rebate, if any. The taxpayer should receive a letter explaining the use of the rebate toward the debt.
Are you eligible? Starting Wednesday, taxpayers may go to tax.virginia.gov/rebate to check their eligibility for this one-time tax rebate.
