Story by Chris Graham

If Abbey Linfert had her druthers, she’d have a 10-piece band with a horn section and a piano and …

Ahem. Reality being what it is isn’t all that bad – given that Linfert has her choice between gigs as part of The Rusticators, a two-person band with Chris Amsler, and Mojo Cookie & The Doughboys, a five-person band with Amsler and a team of Staunton-based musicians.

And Linfert has her choice between two styles of music as well – The Rusticators focus on folk music, while Mojo Cookie’s roots are deep in blues.

“The big difference between the two is really that there’s a lot more creativity when you have a larger number of folks that you’re playing with – and focusing on blues music has been great, because to me that is one of the true, pure forms of American music,” said Linfert, who will be playing at Third Fridays at Bellagio’s Ice Cream Parlor in Downtown Waynesboro on Friday night.

The Third Fridays concert series is sponsored by the Waynesboro Cultural Commission, Waynesboro Downtown Development Inc. and the Wayne Theatre Alliance.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m.

Mojo Cookie plays mainly local gigs – while The Rusticators travel the East Coast playing original folk and what Linfert calls “more commercially viable-slash-more corporately oriented music, which tends to be cover music.”

Linfert and Amsler launched Mojo Cookie & The Doughboys last year after returning to the Queen City from a Rusticators tour.

“I like it because I think when you play in a full band, there is dynamically more flexibility – because obviously in a duo, you’re only two people on stage, and at best you’ve got two instruments, two voices. And Mojo Cookie is a five-piece band with lead guitar, rhythm guitar, percussion, bass and a whole variety of vocals. So it just gives you quite a bit more flexibility,” Linfert said.
