Update: Friday, 4:44 p.m. Crews worked quickly through the extreme temperatures Friday to replace a failed pipe which caused a sinkhole on Route 656 (Georgetown Road) near Route 743 (Hydraulic Road) in Albemarle County.

Route 656 is open to traffic.

The asphalt patch is temporary. Crews will return to the area and place a smoother surface in the coming weeks.

Original post: Friday, 11:28 a.m. Crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation are on the scene of a sinkhole in the southbound travel lane on Route 656 (Georgetown Road) near Route 743 (Hydraulic Road) in Albemarle County.

VDOT is flagging traffic around the scene at this time. Once equipment arrives to begin emergency repairs, Route 656 will be closed to traffic.

Route 656 is closed between Court Place and Hydraulic Road. VDOT is working to remove the failed pipe. That work requires closing the road to through traffic since the road must be dug up to reach the pipe.

The road will remain closed through the evening commute. There is still no time estimate available for reopening the travel lanes.

Residents wishing to access the nearby apartments should do so from Hydraulic Road.

Updates and other real-time travel information can be found on the 511 Virginia website, the free VDOT 511 mobile app or by calling 511 from any phone in Virginia. Local updates are also posted to Twitter.com/VaDOTCulp.
