We have more details in the double homicide in Augusta County area reported over the weekend.

According to a news release from the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office, the two men who died have been identified as River Steven Higgins, 23, of Dayton, who was a suspect in the July 5 stabbing death of River Scott May, 26, of Mount Sidney.

Here’s where things get tricky.

The 911 call, at 2:20 a.m. in the early-morning hours of July 5, reported a stabbing in the 100 block of Old Quarry Road.

While deputies were en route to the scene, individuals at the residence placed May, the stabbing victim, into a vehicle and began transporting him in the direction of Augusta Health.

During the transport, the vehicle stopped in the 2500 block of Springhill Road. Deputies arriving at that location removed the victim and initiated life-saving measures. Staunton Augusta Rescue Squad personnel arrived on scene and assisted deputies with those efforts.

The life-saving measures were not successful, and May was pronounced deceased at the scene.

At the Springhill Road location, the driver of the vehicle informed deputies that he had shot the individual responsible for stabbing May, leading additional deputies to the original incident location on Old Quarry Road, where they discovered a second male, Higgins, deceased from an apparent single gunshot wound to the head.

Both scenes were secured and processed by investigators. At this time, no charges have been filed by the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office, and the case remains under review by the Augusta County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.

Anyone with information related to this incident is encouraged to contact the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office at 540-245-5333.
