Local tally: GOP wins big in Augusta, Rockingham, holds serve in Staunton, Waynesboro, Harrisonburg

Augusta and Rockingham are always among the most Republican parts of the state in statewide elections. That held true again in the 2013 state races.

Republicans Ken Cuccinelli, E.W. Jackson and Mark Obenshain ran strong in the counties Tuesday. Cuccinelli won the voting for governor in Augusta with 68 percent of the vote. Democrat Terry McAuliffe got 24.6 percent, and Libertarian Robert Sarvis was at 6.9 percent.

Jackson, the GOP lieutenant governor nominee, actually outpolled Cuccinelli in Augusta, getting 70.9 percent of the vote. Obenshain, a Harrisonburg state senator running for attorney general, outpaced his ticketmates, getting 74.2 percent of the vote.

Voter turnout in Augusta was 47.8 percent, a bit ahead of turnout overall statewide, which was at 44.2 percent.

Cuccinelli won in the city of Waynesboro, leading a GOP sweep of the city with 51.9 percent of the vote in the three-way race. McAuliffe was at 38.3 percent, and Sarvis got 9.2 percent of the vote.

Jackson won Waynesboro with 55.7 percent of the vote. Obenshain got 57.6 percent in Waynesboro.

Voter turnout in Waynesboro was 44.8 percent.

McAuliffe picked up a narrow win in Staunton with 47.2 percent of the vote, to Cuccinelli’s 44.3 percent and Sarvis’ 7.8 percent.

Northam also had a narrow win in Staunton, with 51.9 percent of the vote. Obenshain won Staunton with 52.6 percent of the vote.

Voter turnout in Staunton was 46.6 percent.

McAuliffe earned a split in Harrisonburg-Rockingham, winning the city with 52.1 percent, to 40.3 percent for Cuccinelli and 7.1 percent for Sarvis, and losing the county big, with Cucinelli getting 67.7 percent to 25.8 percent for McAuliffe and 6 percent for Sarvis.

Northam also got a split in Harrisonburg-Rockingham, winning the city with 55.2 percent and losing the county, where Jackson picked up 71.4 percent.

Obenshain, the hometown candidate, narrowly lost in Harrisonburg, with Herring getting 51 percent of the vote, while the GOP candidate won big in the county with 75.3 percent of the vote.

Voter turnout in Harrisonburg was 43.8 percent. Voter turnout in Rockingham was 48.7 percent.
