Former Social Security commissioner expects collapse of system in ’30 to 90 days’

From the No Good Deed Goes Unpunished Department: the former commissioner of the Social Security Administration said Monday that he expects the “collapse” of the Social Security system “within the next 30 to 90 days.”

The reason: DOGE.

“People should start saving now,” said Martin O’Malley, who stepped down as Social Security commissioner in November, in an interview with CNBC on Monday.

O’Malley explained that budget and staffing cuts triggered by the Trump/Musk DOGE have triggered intermittent IT outages, threatening the stability of the system that delivers monthly checks to the 72.5 million Americans who receive Social Security benefits.

“Ultimately, you’re going to see the system collapse and an interruption of benefits,” O’Malley told CNBC.

And that’s for folks who are already in the system. The budget and staffing cuts are also likely to lead to processing delays for new claimants, particularly hitting those filing new claims for disability and survivor benefits.

“I think many people throughout the country are going to start bringing a lot of heat to members of Congress who have been facilitating, supporting, aiding and abetting the breaking of their Social Security and the interruption of benefits that they work their whole lives to earn. These are earned benefits,” O’Malley said.
