The New Dominion Magazine won two awards in the 2009 News Contest sponsored by the Virginia Press Association. The awards were presented Saturday night in Roanoke at the VPA’s News Conference and Annual Meeting.

The New Dominion Magazine competes in the crowded specialty-publications division, which includes a total of 38 publications with circulation bases ranging from a few thousand to several hundred thousand per issue.

The ND won a second-place award among specialty publications in the special-sections category for its real-estate section. The spotlight award for the magazine was the third place in design and presentation, a category encompassing the editorial content, the quality of the photography and the design and layout of the magazine.

The New Dominion placed in that category behind The Hook in Charlottesville and Boomer Life Magazine of Richmond. The Sweepstakes winner in the specialty-publications division, Style Weekly, did not place in the design and presentation category.

Publisher Crystal Graham, editor Chris Graham and photographer Mark Miller were each honored by the VPA.

This is the second straight year that The New Dominion has won awards in the VPA News Contest. The magazine won three awards in the 2008 Contest.

The ’08 Contest was the first year that The New Dominion, founded in 2007, was eligible to compete in the awards competition.

Augusta Free Press Publishing, the parent company of The New Dominion Magazine, also publishes AugustaFreePress.com, an online-based news website that was founded in 2002.

AugustaFreePress.com, as an online-only news source, is not eligible for Virginia Press Association-sponsored news competitions.
