I-64 Afton Mountain work to continue May 6-9

afton mtnThe Virginia Department of Transportation’s emergency project on Interstate 64 at Afton Mountain will resume on Monday, May 6. The work involves removal of an area of unstable soil from Afton Mountain above the highway at milepost 100.3 in Albemarle County.

Traffic will be restricted in both directions on I-64 beginning at 9 a.m., Monday through Thursday. The restrictions will last 30-45 minutes throughout the day and end between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. After each closure the interstate will be reopened until the traffic clears. Motorists should be aware that the work may be suspended during rain or foggy conditions.

The closures will affect traffic from Exit 107 (Route 250/Rockfish Gap Turnpike) at Crozet to Exit 96 (Route 624/S. Delphine Avenue) at Waynesboro. Drivers should expect significant congestion and delays; passenger vehicles are encouraged to use Route 250 as an alternate route. Message boards along I-64 will advise motorists of the closures and expected congestion in the area.

Motorists should check VDOT’s traffic information web site, www.511virginia.org, or call 511 for real-time information about traffic conditions and delays. Android and iPhone users can also download a free 511 app that provides real-time traffic information based on their location.
