A woman who allegedly helped a Virginia inmate who escaped from custody last year was indicted on one felony charge by a Richmond Circuit Court grand jury this month.

Sasha Castillo, of Washington, D.C., faces a felony charge for aiding in the escape of a prisoner.

The charge is related to the escape of Naseem Isaiah Roulack, a Virginia Department of Corrections inmate who remained at large for more than two months likely due to a series of breakdowns by police. Castillo’s relationship with Roulack is unknown.

Roulack walked past sleeping correction officers in his escape from Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital on the morning of Aug. 12, 2023.

Roulack was able to get a head start on authorities because the hospital wasn’t locked down for more than an hour after his escape.

Roulack broke into the nearby residence of a 70-year-old Richmond man and stole keys to his car, $111 in cash, a credit card and a driver’s license. Roulack’s hospital gown was found later on the floor of the home.

Richmond Police were criticized in the aftermath of the escape because they did not send any notifications to area residents to warn them about the inmate on the loose. Henrico County sent out a reverse 911 alert nearly three hours after Roulack was last seen by authorities.

While on the lam, Roulack was also named a suspect in the armed theft of an automobile in Montgomery County, Md.

The Greensville Correctional Center inmate was captured by the U.S. Marshals Service and Fairfax County Police Department on Oct. 25.

Roulack was serving a 13-year sentence for aggravated malicious wounding, grand larceny and hit-and-run.

The two officers who admitted to being asleep at the hospital resigned their jobs on Aug. 23.

A trial date for Castillo has not been set.

“The Virginia Department of Corrections continues to pursue the prosecution of all involved in this escape,” said VADOC Director Chad Dotson in a news release today. “Inmates who escape or attempt to escape state custody and those who aid and abet them must always face justice for their actions.”
