UVA Football: Jahmal Edrine is a nice pickup at wideout from the transfer portal

I like the potential fit of the wide receiver from the Big Ten that UVA Football picked up from the transfer portal on Friday.

Jahmal Edrine, late of Purdue, will compete as a grad student with two years of eligibility, due to a redshirt year that he took as a freshman at Florida Atlantic in 2021, and a medical redshirt year spent at Purdue in 2023.

Purdue was god-awful in 2024, finishing with a 1-11 record.

Edrine transferred in ahead of the 2023 season, as Ryan Walters was taking over for Jeff Brohm, who had led the Boilermakers to a 9-4 record in 2021 and an 8-5 record in 2022 before taking off for Louisville.

Walters is already done after just two years, and a 5-19 record.

Edrine missed the 2023 season after suffering a knee injury in spring practice, and returned in 2024 to put up decent numbers – 23 catches on 45 targets for 365 yards, for a 15.9-yards-per-catch average, and two TDs.

His one active season at Florida Atlantic saw Edrine put up 39 catches on 69 targets for 570 yards, 14.6 yards per catch, and six TDs.

I’d expect Edrine to pair up with Trell Harris (15 catches/25 targets, 221 yards, 14.7 yards per catch, two TDs in four games at UVA in 2024), as the starters at wideout in 2025.

Virginia is losing lead wideout Malachi Fields (55 catches/94 targets, 808 yards, 14.7 yards per catch, five TDs), Jaden Gibson (10 catches/12 targets, 91 yards, 9.1 yards per catch) and JR Wilson (eight catches/14 targets, 121 yards, 15.1 yards per catch, one TD) to the transfer portal.

Wilson has already found a landing spot, of all places, at Florida Atlantic, one of Edrine’s former stopping points.
