An 8-0 fourth-quarter run put Virginia ahead by double-digits, and the ‘Hoos were able to fend off a late Clemson rally to finish out a 73-63 win on Thursday at JPJ.
UVA (11-3, 3-0 ACC, NET: 36) clamped down on defense. Clemson (10-5, 1-2 ACC, NET: 43) had made 21 threes in its 97-44 win at Chicago State on Sunday; Virginia held the Tigers to 4-of-21 shooting from three last night.
“That was a great team win,” UVA coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton said. “Really happy to see us be able to weather the storm and show some poise when it got close. Up until now all of our wins have been blowout wins, so we’ve got to win some of these games, and we’ve got to be in some of these games. I was just really, really happy about our resilience and also how we played well together.”
Tabitha Amanze had 18 points (6-of-7 FG, 6-of-6 FT) and 11 rebounds to lead the Cavaliers. Sa’Myah Smith had 14 points and 11 boards for Virginia, which has now won five straight.
