Rockingham: Bridgewater students make IT happen

Staff Report

Computer-science students from Bridgewater College will demonstrate their information technology skills this weekend at a prestigious computer-programming competition at Radford University.

The IBM-sponsored Association of Computer Machinery International Programming Contest will feature teams from 83 countries competing for spots in the World Finals to be held in April 2009 in Stockholm, Sweden.

Ray Schneider and Rob LeGrand, assistant professors of mathematics and computer science at Bridgewater, are faculty coaches for the BC team. LeGrand said that each team of three students tries to solve as many programming problems as possible in a contest that lasts for five hours. The team that solves the most problems correctly wins, he said.

“We’ve put together two strong teams of three programmers each, and we’ll continue practicing on programming problems every week until the contest,” LeGrand said. “The competition will be stiff, but our teams have done well in the past. We’re working hard to surpass our past performances and maybe even earn a trip to Stockholm.”
