Inside Miami

  • Sheldon McClellan has seemed a bit banged up lately. The Hurricanes’ leading scorer (15.8 points per game, 52.0 percent shooting from the field, 40.4 percent shooting from three), McClellan, a 6’5” senior, has shot 40.0 percent from the field (12-of-30) over Miami’s past four games. He had 13 on 4-of-12 shooting in the 66-58 loss at Virginia on Jan. 12.
  • Point guard Angel Rodriguez is the engine to the Miami offense. Rodriguez averages 11.5 points and 4.4 assists. He’s not the most efficient shooter on the floor: 42.1 percent from the field and 29.6 percent from three. Rodriguez had a team-high 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting with three assists and no turnovers at Virginia last month.
  • Also watch out for: Ja’Quan Newton (11.1 points per game, 46.9 percent from the field, 36.0 percent from three), Davon Reed (10.5 points per game, 43.4 percent from the field, 33.0 percent from three) and Tonye Jekiri (8.1 points per game, 9.4 rebounds per game, 53.2 percent shooting)
  • Offense: Miami scores 76.8 points per game, seventh in the ACC, shooting 47.4 percent from the field (fifth in the ACC) and 35.7 percent from three-point range (seventh in the ACC). UM scores 1.151 points per possession, 21st nationally.
  • Defense: Opponents score 66.5 points per game, fifth in the ACC, shooting 42.3 percent from the field (sixth in the ACC) and 33.7 percent from three (fifth in the ACC). Opponents score .957 points per possession, 34th nationally.
  • Tempo: 67.5 possessions per game, 255th nationally

Inside Virginia

  • Malcolm Brogdon is getting his fair share of ACC player of the year talk. The grad student leads the Cavs in scoring (17.8 points per game) on 46.5 percent shooting from the field and 40.0 percent shooting from three. Brogdon is currently third in the KenPom.com national player of the year race.
  • Anthony Gill, struggling of late, is still 10th in the KenPom.com POY discussion. Gill is averaging 13.8 points per game on 57.1 percent shooting from the field and a team-best 5.8 rebounds per game. Over his last five, though, AG is averaging 9.6 points and 5.0 rebounds per game on 41.4 percent shooting.
  • London Perrantes fleshes out the Big Three: scoring 11.3 points per game on 47.2 percent shooting from the field and an ACC-best 54.2 percent from three. Perrantes also averages a team-best 4.3 assists per game.
  • Offense: Virginia averages 71.1 points per game (12th in the ACC), shooting 49.6 percent from the field (best in the ACC) and 40.6 percent from three (also best in the ACC). UVA scores 1.171 points per possession, 14th nationally.
  • Defense: UVA opponents average 59.5 points per game, best in the ACC, shooting 41.6 percent from the field (fourth in the ACC) and 34.1 percent from three (eighth in the ACC). Virginia leads the conference in defensive rebounding percentage (74.9 percent). Opponents score .920 points per possession, sixth nationally.
  • Tempo: 61.8 possessions per game, 350th nationally
