Augusta Health receives donation from W&L chapter of Fear 2 Freedom

Chris Graham

More loadingRenee Pullen, the SANE—sexual assault nurse examiner—nurse at Augusta Health, and the ambulance crew at the Fishersville facility drove down to Lexington this week to receive a donation of Fear 2 Freedom kits from the local chapter at Washington and Lee University.

The kits will be used in the Emergency Departments at Augusta Health for sexual assault victims.

Fear 2 Freedom is an organization with the goal of “restoring joy” to those who have been sexually assaulted or abused, encouraging the journey from fear to freedom.  (They use a 2 in their name in reference to the statistic that someone is assaulted in the U.S. every 2 minutes).

The kits (different kits for those 12 and under and for those 13 through adult) include personal items and items of comfort.  It’s important to note that some of the items in the kits are sweatpants, underwear and a T-shirt.  Generally speaking, hospitals must keep a victim’s clothes for law enforcement when they present in the emergency department, so they have no clothes of their own to wear when they leave.

The group was founded by Rosemary Trible (shown with our crew in the one photo), wife of former U.S. Congressman and Sen. Paul Trible, who was herself the victim of a rape at the age of 20.
