policecar3An alert motorist led Virginia State Police Wednesday morning (Feb. 11) to a man wanted by the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office. Mark Zawhorodny is now being held without bond at the Middle River Regional Jail in Staunton on several charges related to violating the conditions of his release.

At 11:28 a.m., Virginia State Police received a call from a motorist who recognized a man walking westbound on Route 250 as that of a man reported missing from Augusta County. Trooper P.D. Goard responded to the location and caught up with the man on Route 250 near the bottom of the eastbound Interstate 64 exit ramp for Exit 107.

Trooper Goard approached the man and engaged in conversation with him. The male pedestrian confirmed he was Zawhorodny. Zawhorodny was cooperative and taken into custody without incident.

The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office is investigating Zawhorodny’s disappearance from an assisted living facility Sunday (Feb. 8).
