Georgia Tech was able to stick with #4 Virginia for a half, but the Cavaliers seized control with an early 12-2 second-half run en route to posting a 72-52 win on Thursday in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals.
UVA (25-6, 14-5 ACC) advances to the tournament semifinals Friday night against the winner of the Miami-Virginia Tech game.
The game was tight for 20 minutes, with the Yellow Jackets (19-14, 9-11 ACC) leading by as many as five before UVA rallied to take a 30-28 lead at the break.
Then the Cavs clamped down on defense with the Pack-Line, limiting the Jackets to four points in the opening six and a half minutes of the second half.
An Evan Nolte four-point play capped the scoring run that extended the UVA lead to 44-32 with 14:11 to go.
Georgia Tech would not get closer than nine the rest of the way.
Malcolm Brogdon scored 26 on 10-of-15 shooting to lead Virginia, which also got 12 points and eight rebounds from Anthony Gill.
UVA shot 53.8 percent from the field (28-of-52) and connected on 7-of-14 from three-point range (50 percent).
Georgia Tech got 16 points from Adam Smith. The Yellow Jackets shot 40.8 percent from the field (20-of-49) and were 6-of-13 from three-point range (46.2 percent).
