A new 1.6-mile road in Waynesboro, between exits 94 and 96 on Interstate 64, opened to vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle traffic this morning.
The Waynesboro Southern Corridor is a two-lane road with a shared-use path, running roughly parallel to I-64.
The road aims to improve access and reduce congestion between Rosser Avenue and South Delphine Avenue in the city.
The new corridor extends Shenandoah Village Drive along the edge of Coyner Springs Park and intersects with Lyndhurst Road across from North Oak Lane. It then follows the existing North Oak Lane over the South River and continues through the city’s industrial park, Nature’s Crossing Technology Center. The roadway has a signalized crossing at the Norfolk Southern Railway and ends at a new intersection with South Delphine Avenue.
The Virginia Department of Transportation’s Commonwealth Transportation Board selected the Waynesboro Southern Corridor for full funding through the SMART SCALE prioritization process in 2016.
In 2023, the CTB awarded a $9.9 million construction contract to a Roanoke-based firm with a completion date of Sept. 22, 2025.
The road will be the primary access road to Nature’s Crossing Technology Center, an industrial park that aims to attract new jobs and businesses to the region.
