I hate to have to admit that I wasn’t aware of the River Ridge Learning Center, which is located in Waynesboro, but has students from across the area – Waynesboro, Staunton and Augusta County – whose special need is, recovery from substance use disorder.
What made me aware was a notice from the school system about an upcoming event at River Ridge, The Recovery Connection, a two-day event – Friday, Sept. 4, and Saturday, Sept. 5 – that will highlight stories of hope, resilience and family recovery from substance use disorder.
“Bringing awareness to the issues surrounding substance use disorders is an essential part of creating space in our community to reduce stigma, increase understanding and connections, build allyship, and open doors to support for individuals and families,” said Amy Christian, director of River Ridge Learning Center.
“Together, we can bring these realities into focus and promote the belief that anyone impacted by substance use disorder should be seen, heard, valued, and supported by their community,” Christian said.
Mission: accomplished, in terms of the bringing awareness part of the whole operation.
The event begins on Friday at 6 p.m. with a screening of the documentary “Together: Family Recovery” at the Wayne Theatre in Downtown Waynesboro.
The screening will be followed by a live panel discussion featuring real stories of hope and healing.
Activities continue Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. with the second annual Valley Rally for Recovery at Coyner Spring Park in Waynesboro.
The Rally will connect individuals and families with community-based resources that provide support throughout the recovery journey.
On the agenda for Saturday:
- A 5k Run/Walk for Recovery (arrive by 9:45 a.m.; run/walk starts at 10 a.m. No sign up required)
- Free lunch (provided by sponsors)
- Guest speaker (2 p.m.)
- A community recovery resource showcase
