A Nelson County man is facing a slew of charges after a tense situation at a home on Afton Mountain Road Thursday morning.
Michael Wayne Scott of Afton faces abduction and firearms charges in the incident, which started at 7:41 a.m. with deputies from the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office answering a call for a welfare check at a residence in the 2300 block of Afton Mountain Road.
The call to 911 was from a neighbor who reported hearing screaming coming from inside the residence.
Arriving deputies heard the sound of a gunshot that originated from inside the residence and took cover, according to a report from the Sheriff’s Office.
Within minutes, a female exited the front entrance of the residence and took safety with the deputies on scene. The female informed deputies that she was in a relationship with the resident, whom she identified as Scott.
The female informed deputies that Scott was in possession of firearms, and he had been preventing her from leaving the residence.
When Scott observed deputies on the premises, he discharged the firearm inside the dwelling and allowed the female to exit the residence unharmed.
The female confirmed that no other individuals were inside the residence other than Scott.
Deputies secured a perimeter around the residence while attempting to establish communication with Scott.
Additional law enforcement officers responded to this address, along with tactical teams from the Virginia State Police and Augusta County Sheriff’s Office.
As the tactical units converged on the residence to execute warrants, Scott exited the residence unarmed, and he was taken into custody without incident.
Scott is being held without bond at the Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail.
