Waynesboro: Teen charged in Pine Avenue shooting

Chris Graham

Staff Report

An 18-year-old Waynesboro man was charged on Tuesday in connection with a shooting that police had initially said was self-inflicted.

Brian H. Henkel has been charged with discharge of a firearm in an occupied dwelling in the Sept.8 shooting of Joshua Via, 21, who suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.

Via has been hospitalized since the shooting.

Henkel is the owner of a 9mm handgun that was found inside the apartment where the shooting took place, police said.

Police had thought that Via was along in a room where the shot was fired, but have since determined that Henkel was also in the room at the time of the shooting.

Henkel is free on bond.
