Churchville Senior Center: CSC members learned about Rosh Hashana

Contributors

The sound of the shofar, a ram’s horn, trumpeting to a lovely chant raised gooseflesh on the arms of the members of the Churchville Senior Center.

The lovely music announced the beginning of Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year. According to Jewish tradition, the time of judgement and remembrance begins the evening of Sept. 28 this year and continues for two days. This is a day of judgement and remembrance, all debts should have been paid, and many Jewish people ask friends and family for forgiveness before this day.

Some Jewish people perform the tashllikh, a custom or reciting prayers near naturally flowing water, which symbolizes throwing all their sins in the water. Members of CSC ate apples dipped in honey in honor of this day.

The event was led by Kay Fine, one of the members, who is of the Jewish faith. This day begins 10 High Holy days that conclude with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. The members enjoyed this exploration into another faith other than Christianity, which is practiced by most of the members.
