Looking to start the season on the right foot, the VMI women’s soccer team accomplished the task with a 2-0 season-opening victory over the host Hampton Pirates Friday evening at the HU Soccer Complex.
Senior Taylor Callahan put the Keydets on the board first for VMI’s first goal of the season by putting the ball in the net unassisted at the 37:01 mark of the first half.
“It was a great start to the season,” said VMI head coach Chris Bergmann. “I was pleased with the depth of our team. We executed the plan we had going into the game and the girls played hard. It was a great way to begin the season and good prepper for Monday’s game.”
Junior Sierra Brewer tallied the other goal for the Keydets when she took an assist from Julianne Knoblett at the 47:48 mark and slipped it past the Hampton keeper for a security goal.
The Keydets worked the Pirates on the offensive end, tallying 29 shot attempts to four for Hampton. VMI also had four corner kick opportunities to two for the Pirates.
Sidney Swoope and Ceci Keppeler split time in the goalie box for VMI with each logging 45 minutes protecting the net. Swoope was credited with the win to go to 1-0 for the season as she started the game and the Keydets earned the game-winning goal in the opening half. She earned two saves in the victory.
Senior Blake Cashin led VMI with six shots during the game while Knoblett was close behind with five. Brewer and sophomore Kiley Cropper finished with four shots apiece.
The Keydets will play their home opener Monday at 4 p.m. when they face South Carolina State on Patchin Field.
