Students at the University of Virginia have a new tool to protect them from drink tampering at bars or parties.
Coasters are being distributed on Grounds and on the Corner that can detect the presence of certain drugs linked to drink spiking, in real time.
Drink tampering is a growing issue throughout the nation, and college students are at a higher risk of having their drinks spiked. A survey of college students found that one in 13 report they have been drugged in social drinking environments.
The Safe Sips initiative was launched by the UVA Department of Safety and Security Police Division, or UPD.
“As a public safety agency, we are continuously looking for new ways to serve and protect the UVA community,” said Christine Haines, UPD senior administration manager. “The Safe Sips drink tester is a simple, effective resource that empowers individuals to prioritize their safety when in social situations.”
The coasters provide contact information for UPD in case the coaster detects a drink has been tampered with, along with a QR code for safety tips and support.
“Our top priority is always the safety and well-being of every member of the UVA community,” said Timothy J. Longo Sr., chief of police and associate vice president for safety and security. “The Safe Sips coaster is one more tool students can use to help protect themselves and their friends, while underscoring the importance of looking out for one another.
“We want every student to feel safe, supported and empowered to act or seek help if something doesn’t feel right,” Longo said.
The coasters will eventually be distributed at student events, residence halls and in partnership with student groups.
In addition to the coasters, police and student health and wellness also provide information on date-rape drugs including Rohypnol, GHB and MDMA.
