UVA AthleticsThe UVA men’s cross country team enters the 2018 season tied for 17th in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ preseason poll, as announced by the organization on Tuesday (Aug. 28).

Virginia is one of three ACC schools ranked inside the top 25 as the Cavaliers hold the second-highest ranking within the conference, following Syracuse who enters the season ranked 10th. UVA also ranks second among schools within the Southeast Region.

The Cavaliers finished the 2017 campaign with a 16th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, capturing the program’s highest finish since 2013. Returning runner Brent Demarest (Charleston, S.C.) led the Cavaliers on the course, tying the program’s second-best individual finish all-time at 19th.

Virginia advanced to the national meet after placing third at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships. Both Lachlan Cook (Brisbane, Australia) and Demarest earned All-Southeast Region honors after finishing sixth and seventh, respectively.

Virginia will begin its 2018 season on Saturday (Sept. 1), hosting the UVA Duals at Panorama Farms.
