Is it too early to think about gift shopping for the holidays? People everywhere should begin budgeting now because holiday shopping can be expensive. The National Retail Federation states that the average consumer spends an estimated total of $1,007 on holiday gifts, decorations, and food.

With so much invested in our yearly shopping, it is no wonder that we are putting more thought into what to give our loved ones this year. Read on to learn what will be trending this holiday season.

Experiences > Things

In the age of minimalism, consumers are beginning to value memories over material goods (you can thank Instagram for that). Studies show that exciting one-time experiences make us happier longer than a physical object would. You may ask, “How does one give an ‘experience’ as a gift?”

Surprise your family and friends with tickets to a concert or an outdoor tour you can enjoy together. You can also look into courses like a cooking class or a wine and painting class. If there is something they have always wanted to try, you can gift them with that experience that they can value more than anything.

Gifts That Give Back

On top of sale hunting and budgeting, shoppers are always on the lookout for gift options that give back. With enough research, buyers can find gift cards for people that would be a stocking stuffer. Target, Cinnabon, Amazon, and Best Buy gift cards are all great options to buy.

This strategy works wonders for relatives you are not sure about, but know they cannot live without their daily coffee or streaming service. By purchasing gift cards, you can avoid the awkward moment of giving someone something they don’t want, or accidentally giving someone a gift that another person bought.

Self-Care Gifts

One of the greatest ways to care for your loved ones to give them a pick-me-up in their most stressful days. Self-care is so much more than scented candles and bath bombs. Wellness items can range from skincare products and journals to monthly subscriptions or audiobooks of the recipient’s favorite topic.

Self-care gifting works best if you know the person well and they have a healthy habit they wish they did more. Bonus points if it is something that you can enjoy together.

Zero Waste Gifts

Nothing says you care more than shopping to help save the planet. By shopping zero waste, you’re purchasing an object that was made with recycled materials. Going zero waste prevents any trash from being sent to landfills, incinerators, or the ocean.

Zero waste products come in recycled or biodegradable materials, are reusable, and do not leave a carbon print. Not only does it avoid producing waste, but it also makes life easier and exposes the giftee to an eco-friendly lifestyle. Some companies may offer refills for products that come in glass jars. Here are some examples of zero waste gift ideas:

  • Stainless steel straws
  • Reusable organic produce bags
  • Products that come in solid form (lotion, shampoo, etc.)
  • Homemade goodies in glass jars

Buying Local

Another way of putting more thought into your presents is by investing your money back into the community. Locally crafted gifts are more likely to be personalized and unique compared to purchasing from big-name brands.

Going local isn’t limited to art; explore your town for homemade treats, skilled artisans, and locally-owned franchises. Buying from independent local stores is also a fantastic opportunity to share something you like about where you live with others.

A More Mindful Approach

With these thoughtful consumer trends in mind, you shouldn’t procrastinate. Mindful holiday shopping needs to be done ahead of time to save money and avoid rushed last-minute gift choices.

With that being said, buying gifts for your friends and family does not have to feel like an obligation. The holidays are a chance to reconnect and cherish those that we care about the most.
