Poll: Virginia voters oppose Redskins name change

Contributors

redskins-helmet1A new Public Policy Polling survey of Virginia voters has the state overwhelmingly opposed to changing the name of the NFL’s Washington Redskins.

The poll has 66 percent of Virginians opposing a name change, with 22 percent in support.

Looking at the issue in terms of voter demographics, Democrats are split 41 percent opposed to a name change and 39 percent in favor. The independent split is 74 percent opposed and 19 percent in favor, and Republicans are split 89 percent opposed and 5 percent in favor.

A PPP poll on the issue last fall had the overall split at 71 percent opposed and 21 percent in favor, so there has been a little movement, but just a little.

Washington is the most popular NFL team in the state, with the support of 28 percent of Virginians, to 10 percent for the Dallas Cowboys, 7 percent for the Pittsburgh Steelers, 6 percent for the Green Bay Packers and 5 percent for the Baltimore Ravens.
