Men’s soccer: EMU gets road win

emu sportsThe EMU soccer men picked up a solid road win on Saturday, beating the heat and a stingy McDaniel squad in a 2-0 final. The Royals got back on the winning track with the decision, improving to 2-1-2 overall.

They stay in the Baltimore, Md., area to take on Stevenson on Sunday. Start time in Owings Mills is 1:00pm.

After weathering an initial push from the Green Terror, Eastern Mennonite got on the board with their first shot attempt. JuniorJuan Luna (Mount Jackson, Va./Stonewall Jackson) converted a penalty kick in the 23rd minute, notching his third goal of the season.

The pattern of few, but quality, chances continued for the Royals.

McDaniel made some attacks on offense, but the defense held and Matthew Overacker (Mount Crawford, Va./Turner Ashby), who returned from injury after a one-game absence, picked up any ball that reached his way. Caleb Lasrado (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) and Carlos Flores-Melgar (Woodbridge, Va./Gar-Field) each made attempts to buffer EMU’s lead in the second, but it took a counter-attack with six minutes left to finally put the game away.

With 5:59 remaining, Joshua Chiquillo (Woodbridge, Va./Gar-Field) surged forward on a breakaway up the left side before burying a shot into the right of the net, making it 2-0

The Royals were out-shot 11-7, including 5-4 on goal, but the defense stymied most of McDaniel’s attempts from being quality. Overacker finished with five saves.

Leave Dianna Russini alone: Sportswriters, coaches, happen to like hot tubs

I’m totally on the side of Dianna Russini in this generated controversy over her being caught holding hands, hugging and lounging in a hot tub with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel. Seriously, what sportswriter isn’t holding hands, hugging and lounging in hot tubs with coaches they cover? Just last week, for instance, Ryan Odom,...
