Lynchburg swept Carolina in a doubleheader Tuesday night at Calvin Falwell Field. The “Cats took game one by a score of 7-3 and won game two 9-4. The Hillcats used two first-inning homers from Taylor Murphy and Anthony Santander to propel themselves to victory. Sean Bradyearned his fifth win of the season in game two.
The Hillcats sent eight batters to the plate and scratched across four runs to take an early lead in game one of the doubleheader. Claudio Bautista reached base on a fielder’s choice and scored on a homer to left field from Murphy. Santander went back-to-back with Murphy to make the count 3-0. Yu-Cheng Chang proceeded to double and come around to score.
In the fourth frame the ‘Cats used a two-out rally to add two more runs. Sicnarf Loopstok started the rally with a single and Greg Allenfollowed with a triple. Allen scored on a wild pitch to make the score 6-1. The Mudcats added two late runs in the seventh to make the score closer but it was not enough.
Mitch Brown was effective for Lynchburg Tuesday night and held Carolina to one run in his four innings of work. The righty only allowed two hits while striking out four, but he did walk five batters. Cameron Hill finished the game to pick up his fifth win of the season. Hill extended his scoreless innings streak to 18 before allowing two seventh-inning runs.
Sean Brady took the ball in game two for the ‘Cats and got through the first three innings without allowing a hit. He allowed a leadoff homer in the fourth, which was part of a four-run inning to tie the score at four. The southpaw threw six frames while striking out five batters and only walking one. Trevor Frank finished the game off with one inning of work to secure the victory.
The Lynchburg offense was productive in game two as they tallied 10 hits, including three from Claudio Bautista and two from Mark Mathias. Chang started the second with a triple and was brought home on a sacrifice fly by Paul Hendrix to give the ‘Cats a 1-0 lead.Mathias singled and stole a base before he scored on a David Armendariz double in the same inning.
The Hillcats big inning was a four-run fourth in response to the Mudcats big scoring output. The ‘Cats recorded three hits and three walks in the stanza which included a two-run single from Mathias.
Lynchburg has swept two doubleheaders and split one this season…The two teams have combined for 43 runs and 63 hits in the first three games of this series.
Lynchburg will finish the homestand and four-game series against the Carolina Mudcats Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Anderson Polanco (2-1, 1.99) will make his first start since rejoining the Hillcats.
