JMU football’s Vad Lee garners preseason All-America honor

lee-vad-15-16James Madison redshirt senior quarterback Vad Lee has been named to the STATS FCS Preseason All-America Second Team, as announced by The Sports Network on Thursday.

Lee is coming off a record-breaking season in 2014, which saw him honored as an Associated Press Third Team All-American. He rewrote JMU’s record book, breaking numerous single-season passing marks while leading one of the most prolific offenses in the country. Lee threw for 3,462 yards (282-for-465) with 30 touchdowns and tallied 4,288 total yards of offense after rushing for a team-best 826 yards, to go with nine rushing scores.

The Durham, N.C., native broke JMU’s single-game passing record twice, becoming the first Duke to throw for more than 400 yards in a game with 406 at Villanova (Sept. 20) and 433 at Richmond (Nov. 15). He surpassed 300 yards through the air five times and put together a six-game streak with at least 250 passing yards.

Following the season, he finished fourth in the voting for the Walter Payton Award and was named to the All-Colonial Athletic Association Second Team. He became JMU’s third-ever winner of the Bill Dudley Award, presented to the top player in the state, and was also voted the Virginia Sports Information Directors State Player of the Year.

Lee is one of 100 players from 63 schools and 13 FCS conferences to be recognized on the three STATS Preseason All-America teams. The CAA had 14 representatives grace the list, the third-most of any conference, behind the Missouri Valley (17) and the Big Sky (15).

The Dukes, who finished 9-4 last season, open the 2015 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. when they host Morehead State at Bridgeforth Stadium.

Leave Dianna Russini alone: Sportswriters, coaches, happen to like hot tubs

I’m totally on the side of Dianna Russini in this generated controversy over her being caught holding hands, hugging and lounging in a hot tub with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel. Seriously, what sportswriter isn’t holding hands, hugging and lounging in hot tubs with coaches they cover? Just last week, for instance, Ryan Odom,...
