How the Wallace, Fishburne partnership came to be

Chris Graham

Wanna know how the Fishburne Military School sponsorship of Mike Wallace’s No. 01 JD Motorsports Chevrolet in Saturday’s Camping World 300 at Daytona came to be? It’s simple, really. Somebody knew somebody, in this case Mike Wallace.
“That was pretty neat how we were able to get them involved. I am friends with one of their board members and we got to talking about how they could get involved in racing awhile ago. When this opportunity came up, we talked and then he talked with their board, and we all agreed this would be a great deal,” Wallace said.

The 01 car will be emblazoned for the race with the Fishburne Military School crest and colors along with the school’s “Leadership for Life” slogan.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for us to kick off and highlight our celebration of Fishburne Military School’s 130th anniversary,” said FMS superintendent Col. Roy Zinser. “Everyone in the Fishburne Family is thrilled to be a part of this race. Mike is a phenomenal driver and great guy who really does embody the commitment and dedication of ‘Leadership for Life.'”

And the hope, of course, is that we can end up seeing Wallace and the 01 car and the FMS crest and the “Leadership for Life” slogan in Victory Lane. Wallace has won three times at DIS, most recently in 2004 in a Nationwide race.

“I know they are excited about it and are involving the entire school, the alumni and publishing articles in their paper and newsletters about them being involved in racing,” Wallace said. “It’s just as exciting for them as it is for us. I’m just hoping we can do them proudly and represent them well on the track. Heck, why not go out there and shock the world with a win – its Daytona baby!”

Leave Dianna Russini alone: Sportswriters, coaches, happen to like hot tubs

I’m totally on the side of Dianna Russini in this generated controversy over her being caught holding hands, hugging and lounging in a hot tub with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel. Seriously, what sportswriter isn’t holding hands, hugging and lounging in hot tubs with coaches they cover? Just last week, for instance, Ryan Odom,...
