An 88-year-old woman was struck by a vehicle on South Main Street in Harrisonburg around 10 a.m. this morning.

The Harrisonburg resident was critically injured and transported to University of Virginia by AirCare.

A Harrisonburg Police Department supervisor was on patrol in the 1500 block of South Main Street when they came upon the traffic crash involving the pedestrian.

The vehicle involved, a four door Toyota Sedan, was being driven by 86-year-old woman from Rockingham County. The female driver immediately stopped after the impact and was cooperative with the investigation.

No names have been released.

A preliminary investigation shows the Toyota was traveling southbound on South Main Street in the left lane of travel. The pedestrian was crossing South Main Street but not in a designated crosswalk location.

The pedestrian crash is under investigation by HPD’s accident reconstruction team.

The Harrisonburg Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Harrisonburg Fire Department and the Harrisonburg Rescue Squad.
