Georgia Tech is set to begin the post-Paul Johnson era, announcing Friday that it has hired Geoff Collins, most recently of Temple, as its new football coach.
Collins, an Atlanta-area native with two different stints on the staff at Georgia Tech, went 15-10 in two seasons at Temple, his first head-coaching job.
Prior to Temple, Collins served as defensive coordinator at Florida and Mississippi State.
A Western Carolina alum, Collins began his coaching career at his alma mater in 1993. He was a grad assistant and tight-ends coach at Georgia Tech under George O’Leary from 1999-2001, and in 2006, he served as recruiting coordinator on the staff of then-Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey.
Los Angeles Chargets offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt, a Georgia Tech alum, had been the program’s first choice to replace Johnson, but Whisenhunt withdrew his name from consideration on Thursday.
Johnson will coach Georgia Tech in the Quick Lane Bowl on Dec. 26 as the Yellow Jackets face Minnesota.
Johnson has an 82-59 record in 11 seasons at Georgia Tech, but the Yellow Jackets are just 24-24 since 2015.
